The Great Snail Purse Hunt: 2009- The Conclusion

OK, OK... I really took the suspense a bit far this time, didn't I? Sorry, things have been a little hectic here.

Click here for Part I of the story! If one little ounce of your body cares what happened, continue on...

After a long night of restless sleep, it was time to face the music. I needed to have a chat with Sassy and see if she held the answers to the missing jewelry debacle.

I had my strategy all planned out in my head. I had to wake her up for MDO, and knowing full-well she is NOT a morning person, I needed to give her some time to stretch, wake-up, and rub the sleep out of her eyes.

She finally seemed half-awake and past the I-might-scratch-your-eyes-out-if-you-get-too-close0or-say-the-wrong-thing-to-me phase, so I approached her...

Me: Sweetie, did you play with mommy's rings yesterday?
Sassy: No.
Me: Are you sure, babe? Mommy can't find her pretty rings and her necklace that were in the bathroom. Did you touch them?
Sassy: I think that I didn't.
Me: Mommy is very sad and I really need to find my pretties. Do you have any idea what happened to them?
Sassy: I think that I played with them and that I put your rings on my toes but they hurted them.
Me: (flames beginning to shoot out of my ears)... So, you did play with my things. We need to find them, sweetie.

(Here I am, remaining surprisingly even-tempered. I have been known to fly off the handle at times, but I think the fact that I had an entire night to stew over the situation benefited both of us. I knew that it made no sense to be angry and hurtful to my three-year-old, and I also knew that I had a much better chance of recovering my things if I didn't scare her...)

Sassy: Are they special, Mom? Your rings and necklace. Are they special?

(Hell yes, they are special! But, on a deeper level- we have a thing with the word special. Sassy has certain things that are special to her, and only she is allowed to play with them. We put them away when Little A is around, and we also put them up when she has friends over because they are special. Little A also has a baby doll that is special, and only for her to love. This is the only way I can keep something for Little A and have it not wind up in Sassy's heap!)

Me: Yes, sweetie. Those are very special to mommy. Those are my special things, and only mommy is allowed to touch them. OK?
Sassy: OK Mommy.
Me: So, what happened after the rings hurt your toes? What did you do next?
Sassy: I put them in my snail purse.

^&^*&^*&^*&^&*^&*^ (pretend music plays) *&^*&^*^&*^&*^*&^

Me: Awesome! Where is your snail purse (frantically searching for said purse)??
Sassy: I don't know.
Me: Well, we have to find it.
Sassy: I think it's, like, lost mom.

Fabulous. And guess what? I searched the house high and low for.EVER and came up with not a single glimpse of that stupid purse. Grr...

Sparing you all various emotional highs and lows that morning, I will get to it...

Sassy's green and pink snail purse was finally located, hidden under some things inside her pajama drawer. I picked it up and shook it... it made no sound. I had a momentary feeling of defeat inside my stomach. Then, I opened the purse, where I saw a small bulge inside the pocket that was pressed tightly against the side of the purse. As I peeled away the elastic to the pocket, I caught a glimpse of sparkle.

All 3 pieces of my jewelry were there- intact. Nothing was broken. Nothing was missing. Best of all- nothing was being processed though Little A's small bowel. Yahoo!

All in all- lessons learned. Sassy understands not to touch mommy's special things. Mommy understands that the curiosity of a sweet 3-year-old can lead to some pretty serious consequences.

Oh, and I totally get it. No need to test me any further anytime soon, k?

Omigosh, I've been thinking of you since I first read Part 1 (I lay down my rings everywhere, unconsciencely all the time!). That snail purse has such a snarky smile on it, like 'I have a secret!' GLAD you found them. And also, I've never posted, so hi! :-)
