{Ten on Ten}: March 2011

Since it's been so hectic around here, I decided to share my {Ten on Ten} for the month right here on this blog. If you all haven't checked out the {Ten on Ten} link-up, it's really a fun challenge to be a part of each month! Sometimes, I like to do a little narrative to accompany my pics, but this time, I think I'll let the pictures speak for themselves...

Thursday Morning Funny...

We were sitting at Heather Lane yesterday afternoon, waiting for Tink to get her hair did...

Sassy was flipping through a magazine, and she looked at an advertisement and exclaimed, "Mommy, this sure is a weird looking dog!"

I immediately burst into an uncontrollable fit of laughter. Or something like that.

Yes, Sassy. That would be a weird looking dog considering it's actually a cat.

I ♥ this girl!

SPA: Orange Crumb Chicken

It is so hard for us to come up with healthy dinner options that are sweet pea-approved, and this has definitely proven to be one of them! The four of us LOVE this delicious, flavorful chicken! I found the original recipe in a Weight Watchers cookbook.

Orange Crumb Chicken

2 T. Orange Juice (I juice the orange that I use for zest)
2 T. Dijon Mustard
1/4 t. Salt
3/4 cup Crackers, Whole-wheat (I use WW Ritz)
1 T. Orange Zest
1 T. Shallots (I typically use white/yellow onion)
1/4 t. Ground Black Pepper
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts (original recipe calls for thighs)

1. Preheat the oven to 350. Prepare a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray.

2. Combine orange juice, mustard, and salt in a bowl. Combine cracker crumbs, orange zest, shallot/onion, and pepper on a sheet of wax paper.

3. Brush both sides of the chicken with the mustard mixture and then dredge in the crumb mixture, pressing firmly to coat both sides. Place chicken in the baking dish.

4. Bake 15 minutes, turn over, and bake 15-20 minutes longer until cooked through.

We typically pair the chicken with some brown rice and a veggie...

If you end up trying this, make sure you come back and let me know if your sweet peas approved! ♥

Oh, Monday...

...how I loathe thee.

Nevertheless, another week is upon us. You get what you get and you don't throw a fit, right?

I did have a pretty fabulous weekend, albeit a weekend without very many pictures. CrAzY... I know, I know.

Let's see- here's the rundown- I took a neat little photography class Saturday morning by Deidre Caswell Photography, and hosted by Sweet Cheeks. It wasn't so much a technical class as an inspirational one- entitled Beyond the Snapshots, and loaded with encouragement to get into a more photojournalistic groove and capture the little moments. I try hard to do this anyway, but I came away with some new great ideas.

Late Saturday afternoon, once Tyler relieved me of parenting duties, Lynzee and I took off and ran some errands. We hit Orange Leaf, renewed our Sam's Club memberships, picked up some odds & ends at Hobby Lobby, and headed to one of my favorite spots- Lucinda's.

I found a pair of shoes that I was head-over-heels (no pun intended) in ♥ with, but at $72 on sale, I just couldn't bring myself to do it... even if I was out celebrating my birthday a little early. These were the shoes- called Beans on Toast by Irregular Choice. Aren't they crazy, quirky, fun, and a little nutty? So me! They were so cute on, by the way. Tyler, if you're reading this, the size 7 fit me best. LUCINDA'S. HA!

OK, enough with the shoes. A few girlfriends met us at Lucinda's, and we jetted over to Hana Cafe for sushi & tempura and then to Cafe Moderne for gelato, coffee, and chatting. The person who developed bacio gelato is a saint. Kissable, for sure. Just sayin'. Oh, and dinner tastes so much better when the tab is picked up, and is accompanied by a new backpack camera case & an Old Navy gift card. THANKS A MILLION, ladies!

Sunday, Tyler and I cleaned, ran errands, grocery shopped, and cleaned some more. Sunday morning, I was on the computer planning meals for the week. I was, of course, procrastinating and began caching up on blogs. My friend Rachel happened to post this PW recipe for pizza, which we made last night. OMG. Dee-licious!

...paired it with a little of this...

We tried both versions. I preferred the fresh basil version, but I think la familia enjoyed it best with the pesto that we had in the freezer from when we picked the last of the fresh basil from our garden last year. In any case, both were pretty delectable!

All in all, a pretty great weekend. T-1 day, 9 hours until my birthday! {I am such a child...} Have a great Monday, peeps!

Link Love... It's Addicting!

Another Friday, another Link Love over @ Kiwi Freckles! Try it, it's fun!

Just another addition that I plan to add into Tink's new bedroom...

We made this during the week, and it was SO good. Girls loved it, too!

Guess who just bought a super cute bag by this designer from this friend for a little early birthday present for myself?? That's right... ME!

I think this would be so neat to have. Sassy loves this game!

Won't this be super fun? There's still time to sign up. GO!

I wonder if she could do another one of these. LOVE!

I really wish I was joining the ranks of the users of these sometime soon!

Just bought this for Sassy to wear for Easter. Love the colors!

Already had an adorable skirt, tee, and cardigan from this line for Tink that I scored on super sale in Chicago last summer!

This looks so comfy for the summer. I could probably wear this all summer long!

Have a wonderful weekend, friends!

SPA: Peanut Butter & Banana Pancake Sammies

It's the return of SPA- with quite possibly the most simple non-recipe I could provide. But, hey... it's all about what works for those sweet peas.

The girls have been enjoying this breakfast-for-lunch treat, and I thought I'd share. Introducing Peanut Butter & Banana Pancake Sammies:

I nuked some of the store-bought mini frozen pancakes today for lack of time, but you could most definitely kick it up a notch by making your own heart-healthy whole-grain pancakes ahead of time and freezing those. We slapped on a little peanut butter and sliced banana and served these along side some yogurt. Voila!

They're kind of irresistable, aren't they?

Weekend Wrap-Up...

This week has flown by, has it not? I can't believe it's already Thursday! I had intentions of telling you all about our weekend earlier on in the week, but that never happened. So, let's get all caught up...

Last Friday, Sassy had an eye evaluation. She did very well- she is slightly farsighted and has an astigmatism, but she is still within normal ranges to not require correction at this time. Yeah! She will have to go back in a year for another evaluation.

Saturday morning, the girls and I got up pretty early, and we planned to get to Target for their Dr. Seuss Read Across America event. Tink has been practically begging to wear her tutu, so the girls decided to wear their snowflake outfits that Nana bought them last Christmas. Of course, I had to take pictures. Tink is getting to the stage where she truly believes that she is a princess in the flesh. Love it!

The girls enjoyed the story time at Target. More importantly, they enjoyed the free chickadee crackers and apple juice! The sat and listened to One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and a few other select Seuss stories. Then, we did a little shopping and headed home for lunch.

After lunch, the girls played dress-up. Sassy couldn't wait to try on the Jelly the Pug dress that arrived for her in the mail from KidSteals. Even though it seems to be about 4 sizes too big, she looked adorable! Tink, too, of course.

Saturday night, I met some friends at Buffalo Wild Wings to play electronic trivia and then we headed back a friend's house for game night. After a rousing rendition of Cranium, we sat and chatted in what ended up being the longest MNO ever. I left at around 3:00 AM to step outside and find insanely dense fog that I had the pleasure of driving all the way home in. JOY! Let's just say that Sunday morning was rough. Although I had only had one drink the previous night {a delicious piña colada}, the sleep deprivation got to me all day long.

Sunday morning, Sassy came up with her own unique outfit to wear. Her fashion sense cracks me up!

Oh, and her personality, too.

Tink came out to play a bit, too, before we headed to the grocery store in the weary, dreary weather. What a gloomy day it was on Sunday!

Monday was the usual- work, school, dance class, dinner, bed. Tuesday, Sassy had her second picture day of the year- this time class pictures were on the agenda, as well. We had no advanced plan as to what she was going to wear, so we made a decision together Tuesday morning. I was super happy with her choice- to me, it screams preschool. I'm going to miss these days!

Tuesday was also crazy socks day for spirit week at Sassy's school. I'd love to know who thought it was a good idea to combine crazy sock day and picture day. I can't wait to see Sassy's class picture! We compromised on "crazy tights" instead...

Tuesday was a gorgeous day outside! Tink decided that she wanted to wear a princess nightgown for her rest (from the dirty laundry basket, since she had worn it the night previous) and when it was time to pick Sassy up from school, there was zero convincing her to take it off. So, off we went in jammies, gym shoes, and shades. What a look! We played outside for a while until Miss Debbie came over for Tink's PAT visit.

Sassy wanted to make sure I took a picture of the "shooting star". HA!

Poor Tink- I swear she looks like a battered child. She is so rough and tumble, that girl...

The girls enjoyed their snack outside and drank water from their "special" cups. I enjoyed the breeze, for sure!

I rocked out my neon tennies...

Tink took a spin or two in her firetruck...

We had our PAT visit, I had my own work visit, and then we went through the whole hospital fiasco. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all my sweet friends who have offered to help. I appreciate it more than you know, and I may take a few of you up on your offers once Mom's surgery is complete.

Yesterday, the girls and I were on our own after MDO since Tyler went in to work late in order to help out around the house yesterday morning since I got home so, so late from taking my Mom in to the ER. Bless him! We mostly played outside.

Readied ourselves for a ride...

Watched Sassy leave us in the dust...

Ate some leftovers for dinner. Played dress-up. Danced.

You know, just another day in the life of a princess.

Can't wait to see what the weekend brings!

Again? Really??

U.

G.

H.

So, here's what's been happening the last 24 hours (or, the last 4 weeks, really)... My Mom has been suffering from the same nasty virus that everyone else has had over the past 4 weeks. She has had a terrible, horrible violent cough that just won't go away. She's also moved in that time period.

Back a few weeks ago, she started complaining that her stomach hurt when she coughed, and has since noticed her abdomen becoming distended. She made an appointment for her GI doc for March 8th. Then, yesterday, when I dropped the girls off at her house so I could work, I noticed that her stomach looked visibly swollen and distended. The area was hard upon palpation- nothing like what a stomach should feel like. I urged her to call the doctor sooner. By the time they got back to her, they suggested she be seen in the ER. My Dad worked late last night, so I took her in after my last PAT visit.

Long story short- by the time we were discharged at 1:30 in the morning, we'd learned that she has a significant incisional hernia- basically, the "inside" incision from her previous surgery last year split open due to the violent coughing and no doubt the increased lifting and physical activity she was doing during the move, and her bowels are spilling through. Gross. I know.

So, what does this all mean? Ding Ding Ding! Another surgery. Hooray! Not.

I cancelled a slew of visits and my first Baby Signing Time class to take her back to the hospital today and then to see her surgeon to schedule the surgery. I really have no idea how involved it is, but I just feel really bad for her and so disappointed. It took almost a year for her to completely wean off of pain meds from her resection last Easter, and then the gallbladder surgery, and she's been through enough! I am also concerned about missing more work- it seems like I have missed so much this year already due to all the sickness, and now this. I need some child care back-ups, STAT!

OK, thanks for listening to my rant. I'll keep you all posted on Mom's condition, and appreciate all the thoughts and prayers! If I'm in and out of this place for a bit, you'll know why.

For the time being, here's a cute picture of the girls to tide you over and lighten the mood! ♥

What in the World?

It's been an interesting few days here in the SPH. Busy. Chaotic. Messy.

I've been battling some sort of sinus thingie, and my head feels all swampy. Like, my brain is functioning at about 30%. Know what I mean?

Anyway, here are a couple of quips from the last few days that might make you go hmm...

On Brownies:

Saturday night, I went to BWW and then game night at a friend's house for MNO. A new member of our group brought these fabulous Oreo Brownies, and I was like, "hey, I just saw a recipe for those on a blog somewhere" and she reminded me just where I saw them, which was here, and coincidentally where she saw them, too. They were good. Like, seriously... GOOD.

So, Sassy's teacher had a birthday Saturday, and we decided on Sunday to make a batch of said brownies to add to her gift that Sassy was bringing to school Monday. I even told Sassy that she could have half of one, even though she is not really supposed to have chocolate. Just for a special treat.

Monday morning rolls around and I find that Tyler slept through his alarm. He got the girls going with breakfast (of brownies... horrible, I know) while I tried desperately to emerge from my swampiness and start my day. I was a little irritated that Sassy was eating chocolate again, but whatev.

We proceed to get ready for our day, and I gave the girls yogurt to balance out their brownie breakfast. Some time later, I was in my bathroom getting ready, and Sassy sprints down the hallway to tattle on her sister for stealing another brownie from the plate...

...as she is chewing the last bit of what I can only assume is the brownie that she stole from the plate.

Seriously?

Does she think I was born yesterday?

I asked her what she was chewing on, and her head slumps down and her eyes avert to the floor. After some prodding (as if I needed a verbal confession) she admits that she took the teeniest little crumb of brownie for herself. Right...

The best part is, as painful as it is to admit, they both could have totally gotten away with the whole thing, as my level of supervision over them at the time left something to be desired. Kids.

On Cookies:

Tyler told me proudly last night that he was participating in a girl scout cookie eating contest at work today.

What?

Oh, and there was a bracket.

And a trophy for the winner.

And the kicker- they reserved a conference room for the festivities.

Are you flipping kidding me? This is what you do at work all day?

I wished him, er, luck with a heavy eye roll.

This morning, I receive two separate emails from him.

Email #1- I am on to round 2.

To which I respond: Congrats. Mike or Amy? {Don't accuse me of not paying attention to you when you talk about work, dammit!}

Email #2- Mike, Amy dropped out at the last minute and another guy, Dan, had to take her place. I competed against Dan. I won in a final surge. He didn’t even drink anything, I don’t know how he finished. The final round will be tough. Mike beat Matt by 5 cookies.

Dear Lord help me.

That is all.
