Labor Day Adventures, Part II

Labor Day was over and done with, but I have to stick to my titles, right?

We got some wonderful sleep Tuesday night, and Little A seemed to be responding well to the antibiotics. She was fever free and acting much more like herself, so we proceeded with our original plans.

Oh, what a fabulous, fun-filled day we had!

I'll give you a hint...

Anyone??

I happened to be at two of my favorite places in the world: standing next to Soldier Field and looking on to The Field Museum.

Wednesday was a free admission day at the museum, and we planned a trip to see a few of our favorite sites downtown. We hadn't been down there since Sassy was born, and I thought that she was old enough to appreciate the trip. The gorgeous September weather certainly didn't hurt!

The Field Museum was always one of my favorites growing up. Of course, you first think of their awesome dinosaur collection, which I thought Sassy would just love. Well, as soon as we exited the elevator to the top floor, we were thrown straight into rock land. Sassy was in heaven! I had forgotten they had an extensive rock, geode, crystal, and mineral display.

Sassy loved it:

I mean, loved it!! We practically had to pry her cold, gripping fingers away from the displays! She would have spent the entire time up there!

Next, we ventured through the halls of evolution. Very interesting:

Sassy just had to go take a picture with this creepy crawly. Ick:

The Hall of Dinosaurs was a hit. The whole process of putting together those skeletons just amazes me. I think I read something that all the skeletons at the Field Museum are 95 percent complete. Only 5 % had to be filled in. Wow!

In case you can't tell, Sassy was having a blast:

She was pretty much in awe of just how big the dinosaurs were:

As we exited the evolution exhibit, there was a really neat wall of pictures:

I had to snap one from the top level. It is such a beautiful building!

We made a quick trip through the hall of gems and jewels... another one of Sassy's hobbies... I bet she wishes she had some of this to wear during dress-up!

I attempted a pic of Ty and the girls in front of Sue:

Nothing cuter than a stuffed elephants butt, huh:

Little A was about done with the museum, so we began to head out. On our way, we passed the Crown Family Playlab... and we just had to check it out. What a great place- it is literally a miniature version of the big museum, and everything is HANDS ON!

Little A really enjoyed crawling around like a turtle:

Oh, and she liked the tree tunnel, too. This was the happiest we had seen her in days!

Next, Sassy discovered the Native American Pueblo. She gathered corn, placed it in her basket, and took it inside the pueblo to make maize:

Next, we visited the music room. The girls enjoyed playing the instruments from different countries:

Once they got over the music craze, Sassy moved on to the rock station, where she practiced for a future in geology:

Or, maybe paleontology:

The had these neat little padded cubes in the corners for the little ones. I kind of wished I had one in my basement!

It was finally time to bid farewell to The Field Museum. I ♥ this city. Tyler and the girls looked on to the skyline:

The harbor was so beautiful:

Sassy had to make one last statement before we left:

Our day was so busy, it will have to be covered in multiple posts...

To be continued...

Labor Day Adventures, Part I

One thing these forced furloughs have afforded us is plenty of time to travel and visit with the people who matter most in our lives.

We did just that over Labor Day weekend and the following week. I left solo (well, with Lynzee) the Friday before Labor Day. We went to Lawrence for a live fantasy football draft. We also did a bit of shopping, eating sushi, and playing trivial pursuit.

Ty and the girls met up with us Sunday morning for brunch at The Cheesecake Factory. Yum. Then, we said goodbye to that crew and started out for Rockford to visit Miranda, Jay, and the girls. I recently teased her about linking to her blog, seeing as she hasn't posted anything in 3 months, but I still hold out hope.

We arrived in Rockford late, probably close to 10:00. We said our hellos and good-nights, and drifted off to dreamland the land of horrible sleep where two children wake up, cry, and want to sleep with you in a very small bed. Yeah, what can you do? The joys of travel...

Monday, Jay and the older girls were off of work and school, so we took advantage of the time together. We went to Alpine Park with the kiddos. Miranda and I joked that it must be twin day, because we saw 5 sets of twins, including her girls... at one park! We spoke to one woman visiting from Utah- she had IVF after years and years of trying and ended up with twin girls. When they were 3 months old, she found herself spontaneously pregnant with twin boys! Can you even imagine?!?

Sassy enjoyed the intricacies of the park:

She's my sweet pineapple, don't you know?

Uncle Jay Jay and the twinks:

Little A and Daddy in the tree house:

Little A sitting in the spinney chair:

The leaves are ahead out there, as far as beginning to change. I ♥ fall!

Little A loved sitting in the swing:

Her hair was blowin' in the wind:

Afterwards, we went to a Mexican restaurant for lunch. Miranda and I ran a few errands shopped, shopped, shopped! Later, we stayed in with all 6 girls while Tyler and Jay went to Buffalo Wild Wings for some male bonding!

Tuesday, the older girls had school, so we planned to take the younger four to the mall for lunch and to play. I love visiting Rockford because Auntie MiMi is THE BEST at doing Sassy's hair. Doesn't she look the cutest??

Little A was a little in the grumpy side:

We went to the mall, and it was rather hellacious. Then, Little A ended up breaking out into a rash. This, combined with the low grade fever she had been running for days, led us into immediate care upon her pediatrician's recommendation. Sassy had roseola at about this age, but Little A's temp wasn't that high. Plus, she had the rash at the same time as the fever, and her mood was definitely declining. Poor girl.

So, it turns out that she had an ear infection and an atypical viral rash. We got some antibiotics and were on our merry way. We decided to leave Rockford a day early and head to Aunt Kathy & Uncle Joe's to get some much needed R&R.

Oh, and one last thing...

We visited Rockford & Chicago in May 2007 to celebrate Sassy's 1st birthday with family. This time around, I felt a sort of deja-vu at Alpine Park. This is why:

One Last Dippity-Doo-Da...

I almost forgot... I was waiting to participate in BooMama's Dip-tacular today.

I am totally gearing up for football season. In fact, the first leg of our trip revolves around football... fantasy football. My first live, in-person draft. Wish me luck!

This is what I will be bringing:

It is a dip, indeed...

...a sweet dip!

Healthy- not.a.CHANCE!

Delicious- You bet!

Chocolate Chip Cheesecake Dip
16 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
4 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups semisweet mini chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups pecans, finely chopped (optional)
Crackers (I like chocolate graham stix or chocolate teddy grahams best)

1. Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.
2. Mix in sugars and vanilla.
3. Stir in chocolate.
4. Cover and chill at least 2 hours.

After it's semi-chilled, you can shape it into a ball and roll in the chopped nuts. I usually skip this part. Whatever floats your boat...

Happy Football Season...

GO BEARS!

Peace Out...

We are off for some new adventures. I'm sure we'll have plenty to share once we return in 10 days!

Standing on Her Own Two Feet...

Little A has made quite the progress towards walking over the past week.

And, she has a new accomplishment that she would like to share with you all.

(She told me so...)

Abiding by the hands-free law:

...and again...

She is strong in her stance.

Sure-footed.

Full of willpower.

The first of many, many instances where this girl will be standing on her own two feet...

Reaching new heights...

...and, don't you wish you looked this cute from behind?

Without Further Ado...

I suppose you all want to know who won the giveaway, no?

Who the lucky recipient is of the $30 gift certificate to The Vintage Pearl?

Well, this time, the winner happens to be my sweet friend, Mama KG! I'm sure her little kumquat will just ♥ anything she chooses... but, especially if it features her sweet little name!

I'm bet you're glad you came back to ask that Qanda questions that was just burning a hole in your brain!

And, I can't wait to answer it, and all the others, in the coming weeks!

Thanks so much to everyone who participated. It was fun!

Sometimes, last is the best place to be!

Country Bumpkins...

For me, Kansas is the country.

I grew up in Chicago. You know... big city, bright lights; the hustle and bustle...

Kansas is placid. Quiescent. Calm.

Still, we live close to a large city in Kansas. Our humble abode sits on a residential street. We have the conveniences of shops and services very close by. It's not exactly country living...

Recently, we visited a friend who actually lives in the country. Down a gravel road. Outside of city limits. They have a barn and pigs and chickens.

What a fabulous place!

My girls l-o-v-e-d wandering about the land, exploring new nooks and crannies... it was so great!

Now, I have a little secret for you.

Shh... don't tell anyone!

Someday, I think I'd like to live out in the country.

I'd like to have land and a barn and some animals to tend to.

We could pull it off... don't you think?

I ♥ wheat. I ♥ sorghum. I ♥ sunflowers.

I am astonished that I am able to say this!

I think I have a crush on Kansas.

Ouchies & Orioles...

Yesterday, Sassy asked me if we could change Little A's name.

"Why?" I asked her. "Don't you think Little A is a pretty name?"

"Yes," she responded, "But, I like Oriole."

"Ariel?" I asked.

"No. OR-iole."

"Oreo?"

"Or-i-o-lllluh!"

"Oriole?"

"Yes. I like that name," she tells me.

"Well, Little A already has a very pretty name, so I think we will keep it," I tell her.

Later, I was sitting in my office working, and she runs in with her baby the baby Little A got for her birthday.

"Do you see my pretty baby, mom? Her name is Oriole," she says.

"Oh, OK. Oriole. Very nice," I say.

Since then, she's been fixated on it. Every doll, every stuffed animal- Oriole. She draws a picture... it's of Oriole. I'm a bit perplexed.

Oriole?

Like, an Oriole?

She's a strange little bird, no pun intended...

This morning, we went to the library for story time and crafts. Afterwards, we took the girls to Old McDonald's for lunch.

Not long ago, we returned home, and I gave Little A her milk and laid her down for her rest. She sat right up, so I knew she wasn't intending on sleeping right away. She was playing happily, and I went down to the office to do some work.

Moments later, I heard a bang and a crash, and the dreaded scream followed by no sound... no sound... no sound... suck in... S-C-R-E-A-M.

Uh-oh.

I ran upstairs... just knowing there would be blood.

There was blood.

A lot of blood.

I have no idea what happened. She was sitting in her crib (I half expected her to be on the floor, to be honest) and blood was just pouring out of her mouth and down her arms.

She must have hit her mouth and teeth on the crib rail? Still not sure, exactly...

After a major clean up on the both of us, and some kisses and cuddles, all is well.

I think the blood was largely from her frenum. It looked like it had split open.

I'm still hoping her top teeth are in there, solidly...

Guess we won't have this issue with Little A!

Poor baby...
